MATTHEW WEIL
Secretary
Matthew has served as a Director for the Foundation since 2002. He spent nearly two decades litigating intellectual property matters, principally patents as a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP. He serves on the boards of Photometics, Inc. and Fresca Medical Inc., two for-profit companies and was formerly on the board of Vessix Vascular, Inc. and Niveus Medical, Inc. He joined the family firm, Christopher Weil & Company, Inc., in 2009, serving as General Counsel and an Investment Advisor, helping individuals navigate the path toward economic independence.
In 2023, Matthew embarked on a new professional chapter, leaving the family firm to co-found an independent asset management company alongside his sister, Caitlin.
Deeply committed to education, Matthew is the current Board Chair of The Preuss School UC San Diego. His own academic journey took him from UC Davis, where he studied History and Russian, to Columbia University for a Master’s in Political Science, and finally to UC Berkeley for his law degree. Matt is fluent in Russian and lives in Carmel Valley with his wife and daughter, who is currently working on her Master’s at the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy. Having navigated transitions from law to finance to entrepreneurship, Matthew enjoys meeting students who are driven to explore their own diverse interests.
